Imperial Gardens

August 28 - 30, 2004, Seattle, Washington
Program Host: Puget Sound Japanese Garden Society & International Association of Japanese Gardens, Inc.

Today Japanese Gardens face many critical issues: the foremost being how to preserve and maintain historical gardens. The second is how to adapt the spirit of the Japanese Garden to the pressures of modernization: its space for gardens is diminishing and people's beliefs, thoughts and tastes on the Japanese Garden have changed and continue to change. Opportunities for engaging discussions will be enhanced by the following questions:

Do Japanese Gardens abroad have comparable issues?
Do persons brought up outside of Japan have the same appreciation and understanding of the Japanese Garden as those brought up in Japan?
How does one try to adapt the spirit of the Japanese Gardens to gardens in foreign countries?
Symposium speakers will present their current thinking and aspirations on the theme through both oral and visual exhibitions. Current conditions and issues of Japanese Gardens abroad will be presented by participating gardens. There will be opportunities to hear from and interact with world know experts. A hands on workshops on garden development and maintenance will be a part of this symposium.
